The international research group “Marfins Africanos no Mundo Atlântico/African Ivories in the Atlantic World” invites proposals for papers or work-in-progress for a conference to be held at the University of Lisbon, Faculdade de Letras, March 15-16, 2017. Topics welcome include : provenance ; chronology ; primary sources ; early trans-Atlantic commerce, or African-European trade in raw and carved ivory. The conference will be organized to include individual papers, as well as workshops and discussion groups.
The host research group, “Marfins Africanos” is funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), and includes 20 scholars from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais -Brazil in a 3-year study of the African and Luso-African ivories and of ivory trade. The project incorporates the first comprehensive study of all African ivories, 15th-18th century, found in collections in Portugal and
Brazil (Minas Gerais).
