Bush Bound. Young Men and Rural Permanence in Migrant West Africa (Gambia)

Whereas most studies of migration focus on movement, this presentation examines the experience of staying put. It concerns young men living in a Soninke-speaking village in Gambia who, although aspiring to travel abroad, settle as farmers, heads of families, businessmen, civic activists, or, alternatively, as unemployed, demoted youth. By analyzing the multiple ways in which young men become sedentary, the presentation offers fresh thoughts on the concept of immobility, and more broadly, open windows on the uncertain social reproduction of rurality in Senegambia.
