C47 The urban images of rural life : its materials and materiality, its actors and its practices
French and English papers from all disciplines are welcome in this panel.
“the bush” is an expression frequently used in some African cities. It outlines two social worlds, urban and rural, but they are closely entangled : urban people say that they come from villages, objects manufacture in cities may valorise the rural. This panel intends to bring together case studies about the way objects, materials, savoir-faire, take part in the creation of an urban images of rural life, when they are manufactured, exchanged and used. Objects and materials constitute a key issue in the articulation of the urban and the rural. The sculptures made in cities with a bush patina ; the different adornments and their meanings ; the medicinal herbal powders sold on markets, the local sustainable food, and so on, all following a process of valorisation and devalorisation of what is said to be typical of the bush but is elaborated in the in-between.

This panel focuses both on the material culture of the imagined bush in cities, and on the way it participates to the distinctiveness and the complementarity of the urban and the rural. We will pay attention to those who are involved in the elaboration of the bush in cities : artists, craftsmen, magico-religious figures, musicians, griots and writers. We will also look at the knowledge and savoir-faire within the circulation of the actors and of the objects between cities and villages. The valorised and devalorised materials will be also considered and their respective system of values.
